Hi, I am a complete novice. I have a Pentax K50 with a 55mm lens but I want a lens that is more suited to long distance. I don't have a clue what I am looking for. Does it need to be a Pentax lens or is it a universal mount? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.
If you're on a budget (and who isn't these days) I can recommend the SMC Pentax-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED Although any brand with a K-mount will work, the Pentax version of the 300mm is generally regarded as the better lens.

Hi, Pentaxvirgin and welcome to the forum. As said above the K50 is a great camera that will take many "K" mount lenses from Pentax and other makers. Unfortunately there is no "universal" mount these days, each DSLR camera maker has their own mount. I agree with all that has been said above and as with much in life it depends on what you want and what you can afford. There are many choices and if you could give a rough idea of what you want to take pictures of and a budget I am sure someone can help.
Just bought the 55-300 (red ring) and surprised me how good it is, very nicely built and sharp even at 300mm every bit as good and better than most 300mm zoom lenses, get the 50 1.8 amazingly good for such a cheap lens
