Okay chaps. Today I had a plan which of course went horribly wrong. I planned to go down to the beach setup the tripod and try out all the cameras. Sadly I got delayed and ended up rushing things as the sun was setting behind me. As such these images aren't the best. I was in a hurry to go and pick the wife up from work and two guys from the local camera club spotted me and wanted to chat :groan:

I started with the 645z set on AV mode @ f5.6 and ISO 100 with the mirror locked up and using the 2 second timer. I took four images at 35mm, 55mm, 75mm and 120mm. These are the lenses that I have. I then used the K1 and FA 28-105 with the same setting attempting to zoom in to create a similar field of view (the 645 has a different aspect ratio 4:3). I then did the same again using pixel shift. Finally I used the same lens of the K3 and took the same 4 images. All the camera based NR, etc. was turned off. THe PP is limited to lens correction, reducing Lightroom's default sharpening to zero and, of course conversion to jpg on export to flickr.

I'll sort out a link to an album once I get them all uploaded. I will share one from each set here along with a crop. I will admit that something went wrong with the fourth pixel shift image as you can clearly see the multiple overlays.

and now some crops

I haven't had a chance to pixel peep yet, but one thing I notice straight away is the consistent colouring across all three cameras.

One item to notice is the windfarm. Between the 'green towers' (top left) you can just make out the blades of an offshore windfarm on the 645z and K3, but these a lot less distinct on the K1 images.
You can also see some of the movement 'artifacts' in the pixel shift images if you look at some of the people on the prom.

I'm no expert but the K3 seems to be doing Marginally better than the K1

?!

The colours on the sky look to have more detail on the K3 although that could be due to changing light I suppose

You have to get into pretty major crops on the medium format to see the difference really
. Thanks for sharing

I'd certainly welcome any more tests you have time to offer!

From my own personal experience of having used all 3 cameras, the order is as you would expect in terms of image quality at least on my own kit. I have only used the 645Z as a loan camera a few times but once you look close in at the files the IQ is noticeably better than the K1, the gap between the K1 and K3 is even more obvious. The examples you show do not support this so it makes me think something else is going on. Maybe camera shake due to wind or you set a different focal point / depth of focus resulting in blur?

These were taken in a hurry and with two strangers chirping in my ear, so I won't try and validate the the exercise. So you are almost definitely right.

The pixel shift images didn't seem to activate after the 2 second timer, but when I pressed the shutter. so there may be some shake there. there was no wind to speak of.

I also think that the focussing may have been on camera random selection rather than single point, as it was with the 645 and K3. This was because I haven't used it much and set it to my preferences yet.

I wasn't happy with the results, but I thought some of you would still like to see them. I shall try and do better

Tomorrow is looking dry and overcast. This will give flat consistent lighting so I will see f I can find the time to pop out again.

Tomorrow use manual focus and live view and zoom right in to set the focus distance precisely on the same detail on all 3 shots.

That's interesting and disappointing. When assembling the images it should detectany detail that's changed outside a set threshold and just use one take, to avoid movement artefacts. My little Sony compact which is now battered and many years old has a feature that takes 6 quick shots in succession, not for increased detail but to get more light in for low light situations. it works great and any movement is thrown out, just using that area from one of the shots .

Does the motion detection happen in lightroom, or is that a Pentax software development trick?

This test reminds me of the quarter mile drag results, where if you don’t get everything perfect the results can be quite different between runs

The K1 image is clearer than the K1 with Pixel shift, I think your pressurised situation hasn't helped :( But I love the idea and look forward to a repeat experiment.

Thanks for doing it :thumb:

The motion detection should happen in-camera. Here's an example of where the camera hasn't detected it:

Clearly someone in a hi-viz jacket cycled across the frame. I can only assume that the object didn't move enough to be recognised

I hope to pop out shortly and try again. The light isn't right just yet and the wind has picked up from yesterday :(
