The future of Flickr

It appears that Smugmug has acquired Flickr :chin:

Not sure what this means for the future of "free" storage - but as a regular user of Flickr I'll be following developments closely :fingers_crossed:

a variety of my stuff can be found here......

Re: The future of Flickr

I used photobucket for years for "free storage" then last year they blocked all accounts from 3rd party posting. I could still access my pictures but if I wanted to post my pictures on any forum site I would have to pay $400 a year for this. If I was a professional then this would have been ok but not as a amateur.
I have since gone to imgbb and find it ok for what I require.

The future of Flickr

I'm hoping that it'll become a good thing, I think Flickr could be improved in so many ways but it's been stagnant for a few years. Hopefully under the ownership of a more photography centered company it'll become what it can be again. Seriously, Flickr is just dying to be turned into the global unifying social media site for amateur photogs, it'd be so easy!

Don't we have enough social media already? I'd rather it stay as it is personally.

The future of Flickr

I have a habit of committing to companies that seem to struggle, Triumph cars, Moto-Guzzi bikes, Nokia Windows phone, Pentax, Keenai (for my RAW and 360 files) and Flickr (for my jpegs), and I am OK paying for the services and unlimited storage that Keenai and Flickr have to offer. I have invested quite a lot of time ensuring that all my photos are on these sites, if for nothing else than a safe backup depository, of course they do offer more than that.

I quite like Flickr as it is, and hope that Smugmug develop it along these lines.

SmugMug looks interesting, seems to be quite highly focused on photographers - does anyone here use it? :chin:

Just hoping that this is good news, and not yet another company going belly up.

I'm all for discussion and groups, but find I am becoming less inclined to make use of social media, e.g. Facebook, Whatsapp etc. There is a trust issue.

Pentax forums like this one, on the other hand, I happily participate in. :thumb:

I've never heard of 'SmugMug' before. There is a Video now on Flickr but it's just about people holding cameras and does not tell how to 'work' SmugMug.

Got 'Computerised and Slightly DIGITISED' but FILM still RULES -- OK ? !!

You'll need to go to Smugmug themselves for that information. The Flickr link is primarily just about Flickr being acquired by SM.
