If SONY had bought Pentax, would you still want to buy a Ricoh GR?

Can't see why not. Not sure of the correlation there. :)

The correlation is important and pretty obvious. If RICOH had not acquired PENTAX, would the GR have even been noticed by as many Pentaxins?
After all, before RICOH took on PENTAX very few people even considered or spoke of RICOH cameras, but after the PENTAX acquisition, RICOH cameras became much more popular [with Pentaxians]. The GR especially was promoted and advertised across all Pentax forums which brought many more people's attention to the camera, resultant curiosity and thus more sales for Ricoh to a Pentax customer base. Those who did buy, spoke a lot about them on Pentax forums, posted photos and generally further promoted the camera.
My feeling is that a lot of people now consider Ricoh cameras as joined at the hip with Pentax and part of the same stable.

However, if another camera company had bought Pentax I would expect the same thing would have happened with that brand.

I'm just thinking aloud here, nothing cynical, negative or pointed intended. Call it a thought experiment if you like :)

Based on what I've seen of your street photogaphs, Smeggy, the GR is made for you. :thumb:

You do have a point Steve, it was Aliengrove's photos that first alerted me to the GR; however it was only from coming across some very interesting articles that I took up an interest in the approach to photography that is far more effective with a smaller camera than the K mount DRLRs. It turns out that various GRs were frequently these photographers' camera of choice, an easy decision for me then to go buy a Ricoh. There's a culture goes along with the camera, so much has been posted on the internet demonstrating how people record urban life; people in their environment. It's like a collective record is being put together which documents life in the 21st century. A great deal of it is there to see on Youtube. Of course this has been happening with street photographers and photo journalists for much longer than that, and indeed is now being taken up with camera phone users, but for me personally the GR ticks all my boxes. Well almost, a tilting screen and built in electronic viewfinder would make it absolutely perfect for me.

PS. I suffer dreadfully from GAS, but control it by sticking to one manufacturer, thus my spending is relatively well constrained. I dread to think what my financial status would have been if Pentax had been bought by Sony, glad that I didn't have to dodge that bullet!

Hello people ;wave: ;wave:

Yes I'm still alive.

Well as Mr. Ledger says - what a difference 4 years makes.

Here we go (takes deep breath)

Fuji X10 - lovley, lovely camera , capable of surprisingly good results - only gets very, very occasional use

Nikon P7700 - absolutely love this camera to bits (it's also a big reason why the X10 rarely gets an outing) 28 - 200 mm (35mm equivalent) f2 - f4 lens, lots of manual controls, dials and buttons and fully articulated screen - make this my favourite compact I own

Sony RX 100 mk 11 - I hate the loathsome piece of crap and wish I'd never bought it (much preferred my fuji XF-1 - it died) - never gets used

Canon Eos-m (Mk 1) - fooking love this camera. Small, light, touch screen. Small, light and optically very good lenses. I also have some auto extension tubes for it. Gets lots of use, especially when doing urbex shoots - 4 -6 hours or more yomping round derelict places weight matters to an old git like me.

Canon 650D - nice and light for a dslr, fully articulating screen. Gets a fair bit of use - esp urbex when not using the Eos-m but general use too.

Canon 70D - great camera - lots to like. Quite heavy though (probably similar to the Pentax K5 tbh). Gets quite a bit of use - use it pretty much exclusively when shooting models and oft when shooting people at events like Whitby goth, steampunk etc.

Pentax K5 and 200D - pretty much gathering cobwebs.

Hope all here are well.

I've been on an OLYMPUS trip ( Ha ha ! ) lately having been GIVEN many Olympus cameras now -- I have been out to London's Brick lane with OM-10 ( which Donor said " Its not working -- shutter and mirror jammed but you can have it ") so I put in NEW BATTERIES ( as you do -- )and mirror came down, shutter worked so i took off base-plate and Lubricated cogs and levers and it is now very happy ! SO ----i loaded up with 11/2006 dated Fuji VELVIA rated 32 ASA and got 'perfect'results ! Then I was given a 2003 E-1 + 45-54mm Zuiko , some exposure modes and flash not working BUT it works on 'A' with my Pentax and Russian M42 lenses and on 'P' with Olympus lens. I have been trying the Russian Helios 44-2 58mm f2 lens on it mostly at full aperture and got really SHARP snaps ! then I am going out with an XA shortly. So much gear and having been ILL with Bowel Cancer have to take things easy.
