Today I had a very positive meeting with an advertising agency. In the lead up they mentioned that they get a lot of requests for food photography. Sadly that was something I didn't have in my portfolio.
So, on Monday, I took a quick walk to the local supermarket, browsed the 'clearance and late date' aisle and came home with a few props. What you see here is the end results.

All were shot with the 645z and either the 120mm macro or 75mm prime.

1. Toasted teacakes and a latte.

2. Tasty pie and tinned spuds

3. Exceedingly good cakes

4. Monday's dinner

5. Salad Fall (this was shot with speedlights rather than strobes to help freeze the motion)

These are not as good as they should be and would need more work if I were providing them for a client. However I printed them out at A3 and he was sufficiently impressed enough to add me to his list of preferred togs and ask me to quote on some jobs.

Thanks guys. I meant add that you can click through for the full size image. Zooming in on the pizza or teacake really shows the detail that the 645 is capable of.

Good stuff.

What's the background to the last one?

Thanks. It's a black paper roll hanging behind and the bowl is sitting on a 'workmate' with a black felt cloth draped over it. The image was tweaked slightly in LR to get is pure black.

I once read somewhere that advertising food shots are or were treated with various sprays varnishes, etc to enhance the look that the food wasn't actually edible.

The pizza was definitely eaten and enjoyed. Although the glass of 'beer' in the background was actually cold, very diluted coffee rather than the real thing.

The teacake was toasted and the butter poured on with the clumps melted with a hot air gun. It was thrown away but only because it had got cold.
Although I tried to avoid it the sugar craving fairies forced me to eat the cakes.

However the 'tasty' pie was cut open and the top re-fixed with PVA glue. The contents were scraped forward and replaces with tissue to support the pie top. It was then liberally sprayed with WD40 to give it the glossy/greasy cooked appearance as were the potatoes. The 'meat' was also cloned in PS to give it some more substance. The peas were just defrosted and not heated and the potatoes were straight out of the tin.

Needless to say, none of that plate was eaten.

The salad was also scrapped, but that was because it had started to go brown around the edges and the peppers were feeling very squiggy! The spring onions were chopped up and added to the pizza though :) This was a composite of around 8 images.

The latte was poured away as I just didn't fancy it. The layered effect was part real, part fake. The Tassimo did a good job on the bottom white to brown layer and the thin froth on the top. However the dark brown layer was added in PS using a black brush and toning down the opacity on a darken layer.

There are many other tricks, such as using mashed potato or dough instead of ice cream and PVA instead of milk for cereals. Apparently it's normal practice to 'scotchguard' cornflakes to stop them going soggy :)

I hate to think what the badly photoshopped women in the Daily Mail were sprayed with to enhance them :D :D :D

It always makes me laugh when you get your dreary McDonald's burger, and hold it up to the advertising photo displayed on the wall.
